Pods is a framework for creating, managing, and deploying customized content types and fields for any project. — by Scott Kingsley Clark
What to do
- Update to the latest version (3.3.9.2). Anything older than 3.3.9.2 has at least one known issue listed below. Dashboard → Updates, or Plugins → “update now”.
- If you cannot update right away, deactivate it until you can.
- Turn on auto-updates for it: Plugins → “Enable auto-updates” on its row.
- If you ran a vulnerable version and something looks off (spam pages, strange admins, redirects), run the free scan.
With WP-CLI: wp plugin get pods --field=version shows what you run; wp plugin update pods updates it.

Details from the advisory
The Pods – Custom Content Types and Fields plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'not_found' Shortcode Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.9.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Details from the advisory
The Pods WordPress plugin before 3.3.9.2 does not restrict which functions a display callback may resolve to, allowing users with the author role and above to read arbitrary files from the server, including files outside the web root. Only sites using the restricted display-callback mode are affected, which is the automatic default on installations whose first Pods version predates 3.1.

- Access needed (per CVSS)
- No login needed
- Range from
- CVE record (the advisory publisher) · score by Wordfence
Details from the advisory
The Pods – Custom Content Types and Fields plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation via Authorization Bypass in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.9. The vulnerability exists because the pods_admin AJAX router funnels every access check — including the method allowlist, nonce verification, login enforcement, and capability gate — through pods_error(), which under the JSON meta-box-loader compatibility path only writes failures to the PHP error log and returns false instead of terminating the request, rendering all guards ineffective. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to escalate their privileges to Administrator or overwrite the password of any user account, including the site owner's, enabling complete site takeover, or perform another administrator action.

This is due to the fact that the plugin allows the use of a file inclusion feature via shortcode. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor access or higher, to create pods and users (with default role).
