What to do

  1. Replace it. A closed plugin gets no updates through WordPress, so any hole found from now on stays open.
  2. Deactivate and delete it once you have a replacement (Plugins → Deactivate → Delete). Deleting removes its files; deactivating alone leaves them on the server.
  3. If you ran a vulnerable version and something looks off (spam pages, strange admins, redirects), run the free scan, or have us clean it: Emergency Cleanup, $499.

With WP-CLI, once you have a replacement: wp plugin deactivate optional-email && wp plugin delete optional-email

Details from the advisory

The Optional Email plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation via Account Takeover in all versions up to, and including, 1.3.11. This is due to the plugin not restricting its 'random_password' filter to registration contexts, allowing the filter to affect password reset key generation. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to set a known password reset key when initiating a password reset, reset the password of any user including administrators, and gain access to their accounts.
