What to do now

  1. Update SMS Alert to 4.0.1 or newer (the latest is 4.0.3): Dashboard → Updates, or Plugins → “update now”.
  2. If you cannot update right away, deactivate it until you can.
  3. Turn on auto-updates for it: Plugins → “Enable auto-updates” on its row.
  4. Not sure which version you run? Check your version against every known SMS Alert issue. With WP-CLI: wp plugin get sms-alert --field=version.
  5. If you ran an affected version and something looks off (new admin users, spam pages, redirects), run the free scan below.

The advisory

The SMS Alert WordPress plugin before 4.0.1 does not bind the account whose password is being changed to the phone number that was actually verified during its OTP password reset, allowing unauthenticated attackers to set a new password on an arbitrary account, including an administrator, by verifying a one-time code sent to a phone number they control.
