How to fix CVE-2026-71488 in league/commonmark
- Find the installed version:
composer show league/commonmark. If you never required it yourself, composer why league/commonmarkshows which package pulls it in. - Update it:
composer update league/commonmark --with-all-dependencies. You need 2.9.0 or newer. - If Composer will not go that high, your composer.json constraint is holding it back. Widen it (for example
"league/commonmark": "^2.9.0"if you can take that version), or upgrade the package that requires it. - Run
composer audit. It reads the same advisory data and should no longer list CVE-2026-71488. - Commit composer.lock and deploy it. On the server, run
composer install --no-devfrom the lock file, notcomposer update.
If you cannot upgrade yet
- Rate-limit the affected endpoint and cap request body, header and upload sizes at the web server.
- If your app does not use the affected feature, note that in your audit, but still plan the upgrade.
The CVE-2026-71488 advisory
league/commonmark is a PHP library for parsing and rendering CommonMark Markdown. From 0.6.0 until 2.9.0, specially crafted Markdown lines can cause the parser to have quadratic time complexity when converting, because several parsing paths repeatedly rescan growing portions of a line to translate between character positions and byte positions, and the Autolink extension can also copy and validate the remaining line at every URL-like prefix, allowing an attacker who can submit Markdown for conversion to consume disproportionate CPU time with a comparatively small request. This issue is fixed in 2.9.0.
