What to do now

  1. Update Customer Engagement System to 2.0.2 or newer (the latest is 2.0.3): Dashboard → Updates, or Plugins → “update now”.
  2. If you cannot update right away, deactivate it until you can.
  3. Turn on auto-updates for it: Plugins → “Enable auto-updates” on its row.
  4. Not sure which version you run? Check your version against every known Customer Engagement System issue. With WP-CLI: wp plugin get popup-by-supsystic --field=version.
  5. If you ran an affected version and something looks off (new admin users, spam pages, redirects), run the free scan below.

The advisory

The Customer Engagement System WordPress plugin before 2.0.2 does not restrict access to its MailChimp interest-group lookup or validate the API key supplied to it, allowing unauthenticated users to make the server open connections to arbitrary internal hosts and ports and infer from response timing which ones are reachable.
