What to do now

  1. Update User Profile Builder to 4.0.5 or newer (the latest is 4.0.6): Dashboard → Updates, or Plugins → “update now”.
  2. If you cannot update right away, deactivate it until you can.
  3. Turn on auto-updates for it: Plugins → “Enable auto-updates” on its row.
  4. Not sure which version you run? Check your version against every known User Profile Builder issue. With WP-CLI: wp plugin get profile-builder --field=version.
  5. If you ran an affected version and something looks off (new admin users, spam pages, redirects), run the free scan below.

The advisory

The User Profile Builder WordPress plugin before 4.0.5 does not sanitise and escape one of its shortcode attributes before outputting it back in a redirect message, which could allow users with a role as low as contributor to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks against higher-privileged users who submit the affected form.
