What to do now

  1. Update Enable SVG, WebP, and ICO Upload to 1.1.6 or newer: Dashboard → Updates, or Plugins → “update now”.
  2. If you cannot update right away, deactivate it until you can.
  3. Turn on auto-updates for it: Plugins → “Enable auto-updates” on its row.
  4. Not sure which version you run? Check your version against every known Enable SVG, WebP, and ICO Upload issue. With WP-CLI: wp plugin get enable-svg-webp-ico-upload --field=version.
  5. If you ran an affected version and something looks off (new admin users, spam pages, redirects), run the free scan below.

The advisory

The Enable SVG, WebP, and ICO Upload WordPress plugin before 1.1.6 does not prevent animation elements in uploaded SVG files from changing a link's target to a javascript: URI, which could allow users with the author role and above to bypass its SVG sanitization and perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks that execute in WebKit-based browsers such as Safari.
