What to do now

  1. Update Advanced Custom Fields to 0.9.2.8 or newer: Dashboard → Updates, or Plugins → “update now”.
  2. If you cannot update right away, deactivate it until you can.
  3. Turn on auto-updates for it: Plugins → “Enable auto-updates” on its row.
  4. Not sure which version you run? Check your version against every known Advanced Custom Fields issue. With WP-CLI: wp plugin get acf-extended --field=version.
  5. If you ran an affected version and something looks off (new admin users, spam pages, redirects), run the free scan below.

The advisory

The Advanced Custom Fields: Extended plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Sensitive Information Exposure in all versions up to, and including, 0.9.2.7 via the process. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract sensitive data including the WordPress password hash of any user by injecting a {get_user} template tag that is resolved and written as a publicly readable term name. Exploitation requires that an administrator has configured a public [acfe_form] shortcode page with a Term action using a save.name field mapping — a supported and documented configuration.
