What to do now

  1. Update User Profile Builder to 4.0.4 or newer (the latest is 4.0.6): Dashboard → Updates, or Plugins → “update now”.
  2. If you cannot update right away, deactivate it until you can.
  3. Turn on auto-updates for it: Plugins → “Enable auto-updates” on its row.
  4. Not sure which version you run? Check your version against every known User Profile Builder issue. With WP-CLI: wp plugin get profile-builder --field=version.
  5. If you ran an affected version and something looks off (new admin users, spam pages, redirects), run the free scan below.

The advisory

The User Profile Builder – Beautiful User Registration Forms, User Profiles & User Role Editor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via First Name Field in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable when the Email Confirmation feature is enabled in Profile Builder.
